AP Lit and Comp
Tyler learned how to read at a very young age with the help and encouragement of his parents. His parents would read to him everyday and after a while, he began to pick it up fairly quickly. In elementary school, Tyler was advanced in reading and typically read books 2-3 grade levels above his grade. As a child, Tyler loved to read and would spend quite a bit of his free time reading books. As Tyler grew up, he began to not read as much as he used to when he was younger. The reason why he didn't read as much anymore wasn't because he disliked reading, but instead because most books didn't interest him anymore. He had trouble getting in to a book and would stop reading them after a few chapters. Every once in a while, Tyler would come across a book that he liked and read the whole book through, but he didn't read nearly as much as he used to. Now Tyler is in his senior year of high school and he has only read a total of 5 books, beginning to end, in his high school career. He now spends his free time doing other things and rarely ever reads books unless he is required to. Tyler still enjoys reading when he reads books that interest him and he will finish them. Reading still comes easily for Tyler, he is a very strong reader and he will sometimes choose to read a challenging book. Tyler does not have a set reading schedule to read books every day, but he does read other things daily. Sometimes he will read internet articles, news articles, and he also enjoys reading the bible quite often.
Tyler has never really been a person who writes for the fun of it or one who writes just to write. It's not that he doesn't know how to write, because he does, but Tyler would rather be working on other stuff rather than writing something. Tyler would probably be classified as not being a writer because he only writes when he is required to for school. Tyler does not choose to write for fun in his free time or anytime unless it is mandatory. He learned how to write essays when he was 6th grade and he was actually pretty good at it, but writing didn't interest Tyler so he did not try to better his writing. In middle school, Tyler had a little bit of a tough time with writing because it was his least favorite subject and he didn't try very hard to get better at it. As Tyler made his way through high school, his writing skills did improve as he wrote more. Now, he is a pretty good writer and he does not struggle as much anymore, but Tyler still might have a little bit of trouble when writing a long paper. Tyler is a very straight forward person and he likes to get right to the point. This does help Tyler in some ways, but it does not help him for writing papers because he tends not to add as much detail as he should. Many teachers in the past have told Tyler that he has good writings but he just needs to add more detail to make his writings more in depth. Tyler sometimes has a tough time staying focussed while writing and he can off track very easily. It may take him twice as long as someone else to write a paper or even paragraph. Tyler gets writers block quite often while writing and doesn't know where to get ideas for writing. Unless Tyler gets a specific topic to write about, he will struggle coming up with ideas.
